LIVINGSTON, Montana — The wife of a Gallatin County sheriff’s captain was killed and his teenage son is missing after a boat the family was on capsized in the Yellowstone River.

Park County Undersheriff Clay Herbst said in a statement early Saturday that a portion of the river has been closed from Mayor’s Landing in Livingston to the Sheep Mountain Fishing Access site so that rescue teams can search without interference.

Herbst says dispatchers received a call of the capsized boat Friday evening.

The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office announced on Saturday afternoon that the people on board included Capt. Jim Anderson, his wife Angie, his son James and his daughter, who was not named.

Angie died on scene and James remained missing by press time Saturday evening.

James is reported to have red hair and is wearing a blue shirt and swimming trunks.

There were six ground crews with two dogs combing the shores, a dive team and seven boats with four dogs searching the river and two helicopters and drones searching from the air, according to the Park County Sheriff’s Office.

Multiple agencies are helping with the search including Park, Gallatin, Flathead, Lewis and Clark, Stillwater and Sweetgrass County sheriff’s offices, the Montana Highway Patrol and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

Two Bear Air, Gallatin County 911, Gallatin County Emergency Services, the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and the Salvation Army are also assisting with the effort.

In a written statement, Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin said that Anderson’s family thanked all the emergency responders and search and rescue volunteers for their efforts to find James.

“Family is everything, it’s why we do what we do and it’s also why it hurts that much more when it’s our family,” Gootkin said. “We hurt for Jim and his family. They have a long, difficult road ahead but they are not alone. We will help and support them no matter what they need or how long it takes.”

Gootkin added that the public is asked not to respond to the scene to assist. “We have all the help we need at this this time.”
