Authorities are still not saying much about a Thursday incident in which Pocatello police chased and opened fire on suspects.

Pocatello police have referred all questions to the Idaho State Police, who said there’s nothing to release yet because the incident remains under investigation.

Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen has provided the most information about the incident thus far, saying that Pocatello police twice opened fire on the suspects.

Nielsen also said that he believes two of the suspects were wounded by police.

Those suspects are Terrence Griggs, 27, of Pocatello, and Stacy Carter, 21, of Chubbuck, both of whom were taken into custody after the chase ended on Thursday evening. Griggs and Carter were then treated at Portneuf Medical Center before being booked into Bannock County Jail.

Pocatello police have confirmed that there was a third suspect — a woman between the ages of 20 and 30 wearing all black — who jumped from the car occupied by Griggs and Carter as it fled officers. Pocatello police are still searching for this woman and are asking for anyone with information about her to contact them at 208-234-6100.

Neither Pocatello police nor state police have provided any information on whether Griggs and Carter were in fact wounded by Pocatello officers or if any of the suspects shot at the officers. Pocatello police have confirmed the chase occurred and shots were fired during the pursuit but no further details have been provided.

Nielsen said the incident began around 4:50 p.m. outside the Chubbuck McDonald’s on Yellowstone Avenue and this was the first location where Pocatello police opened fire on the suspects. Pocatello police have confirmed that they were outside the McDonald’s to arrest one of the three suspects on a warrant.

Griggs, Carter and the unidentified woman then fled the McDonald’s in a car with the police in pursuit and the ensuing high-speed chase soon entered Pocatello. On West Griffith Road in Pocatello, police used spike strips to puncture the car’s tires. Nielsen said Pocatello police opened fire on the car at this point and he said the reason might have been that the officers deploying the spike strips thought the suspects’ car was going to hit them.

Pocatello police said they believe the woman jumped from the car shortly thereafter when the chase continued onto Wilson Avenue.

The chase ended around 5:20 p.m. when a Pocatello police car intentionally nudged the rear of the suspects’ vehicle, causing it to spin out and come to a halt at the intersection of Highway 30, North Main Street and Hawthorne Road, Nielsen said.

The car had been driving on its rims after its tires had been spiked and the rims were so hot that the vehicle actually caught on fire after the chase ended. Pocatello firefighters responded and extinguished the flames.

Griggs and Carter were taken into custody after the chase ended and were transported via Pocatello Fire Department ambulances to PMC. They were treated at the hospital and then transported late Thursday night to Bannock County Jail where they’re currently being held.

Griggs is being held on three arrest warrants for previous incidents and a felony eluding charge for Thursday’s incident.

Carter is being held on two arrest warrants from previous incidents; no charges have yet been filed against her for Thursday.

Pocatello police and state police have not said when they’re going to release more information, but it’s likely more details will emerge at some point this week.
