Firefighters across East Idaho have contained a handful of wildfires.

Fort Hall Fire Chief Brian Briggs said a fire that was reported around 6:30 p.m. near Ross Fork Road on the Fort Hall Reservation on Monday covered 77 acres.

Initial reports indicated that it was started by a vehicle fire. However, Briggs said that was not the case. Although there was a vehicle in the area when the fire started, the cause is still under investigation.

Firefighters from multiple agencies were able to contain the blaze on Monday night, but they continued to work in the area on Tuesday.

No injuries were reported, and there was no structural damage.

The fire burned through grasses.

Briggs said hot vehicles and dragging trailer chains can cause dry grasses to catch on fire, so he is asking drivers to stay on main roads and away from grasses whenever possible.

Firefighters responded to the Hess Fire near the Twin Springs Campground, northeast of Holbrook, on Tuesday.

Lynn Ballard, fire information officer with the Eastern Idaho Interagency Fire Center, said lightning started that fire, which covered 29 acres of primarily private land and a smaller acreage on the Curlew National Grassland.

Firefighters were able to control that fire by 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

The King Fire, located 5 miles west of Thatcher, was also contained at 9 p.m. Tuesday night at 1/10 of an acre in size.

The Maple Canyon Fire, located 2 to 3 miles east of Bennington, grew to 10 acres before being suppressed.

There were no significant changes to the two fires being managed by the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, according to a news release issued on Tuesday.

The Big Elk Fire burning 12 miles northeast of Swan Valley was still estimated to be two acres in size. The cause of that fire, which started on July 26, is still under investigation, according to the news release.

The Lanes Creek Fire, which is approximately 116 acres in size, is still burning 9 air miles west of Freedom, Wyoming. That fire was caused by lightning on June 30, according to the news release.
