A Kuna man was killed in a snowmobiling accident over the weekend in Adams County.

Jason Haines, 41, was buried in an avalanche near Wilson Creek trailhead in the Anderson Creek area on Saturday, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s office. The region is just west of Cascade.

The news release stated that other snowmobilers in the area assisted to get Haines out of the snowpack but that he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Adams County Sheriff Ryan Zollman thanked the Valley County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in search and rescue and first response efforts.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during their time of grief,” the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said in the news release.

The Idaho Parks and Recreation Department says on its website that snowmobiling continues to grow in popularity in Idaho. It also said while it is one of the best ways to enjoy the state’s backcountry, it can be hazardous.

According to the department’s website, some basic safety tips for those heading out include letting someone know where you are going and when you are expected to return; don’t ride alone — two snowmobiles traveling together is safer than one; don’t drink alcohol and ride; carry basic emergency and survival equipment and wear adequate winter clothing and protective glasses, goggles or face shields; and be familiar with your snowmobile.
