POCATELLO — A 28-year-old local man was arrested early Monday morning after police say he pointed a loaded handgun at two people and threatened to kill one of them following an argument.

Izaac Scott Leon, of Pocatello, has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal obtained Tuesday. Prosecutors are also seeking a deadly weapon enhancement against him for using a weapon during the commission of a crime, court records show.

The incident unfolded around midnight Monday after Pocatello police were dispatched to an incident in the area of Hiline Road in Pocatello, police said.

According to court records, Leon had gotten into an argument with a man while driving home. The man exited Leon’s truck and attempted to walk home and Leon followed behind him in his truck, threatening him from inside the vehicle, police said.

Leon then left the area, returned home and retrieved a handgun before locating the man, who was talking to a woman in a nearby parking lot, the report says, adding that Leon arrived in his truck and began yelling at the man from the driver’s seat.

With both the man and the woman standing next to each other, Leon pointed a black Glock handgun at them, racked the slide and told the man he would kill him if he did not retrieve his belongings from Leon’s house, according to court records. Both the man and woman told police they were in fear for their safety and believed Leon would shoot them if they moved or ran. Leon pointed the gun at them for several seconds before driving away, police said.

Officers located Leon on the street in front of his residence, where he had discarded the handgun in the bed of his pickup truck, police said. Officers found a live round in the chamber of the handgun. Leon was detained and determined to be intoxicated, according to the police report.

Leon told officers he had pulled the gun in self-defense, stating he had followed the man intending to fight him with his fists but that the man had pulled out a knife, police said.

Leon was subsequently arrested and transported to the Bannock County Jail in Pocatello.

Leon appeared before 6th District Magistrate Judge David W. Cousin for an arraignment hearing Tuesday where his bond was set at $20,000.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on June 8 for a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors will attempt to present sufficient evidence to elevate the case from magistrate to district court for trial.

If convicted of both aggravated assault charges, Leon faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
