POCATELLO — A 42-year-old local man was recently arrested after police say he squeezed a 13-year-old boy’s neck for five seconds, kicked him in the calf and slapped him across the face.

Chad Aaron Baker, of Pocatello, has been charged with felony injury to a child following the Pocatello police investigation.

The incident unfolded around 9:49 p.m. Thursday when Pocatello police were dispatched to a home in Pocatello for the report that Baker had squeezed a child’s neck for five seconds, according to a police report the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

Officers arrived at the Pocatello home and contacted Baker, who told officers that he did have “a little problem with (the child) earlier in the day,” police said.

Officers then spoke to the 13-year-old child who said that the incident occurred after he was arguing with his brother and Baker thought he was talking back to his mother, according to the report.

The boy said Baker then grabbed him by the neck and squeezed for five seconds before kicking him in the calf and walking him inside of the residence, police said.

Once inside the home, the boy went downstairs to a bedroom and Baker followed him before slapping him across the face, the report says.

Officers observed a red handprint on the boy’s face as well as bruising to both sides of the boy’s neck, said police, adding that the bruising on the left side of the boy’s neck had what appeared to be a fingerprint.

Baker was then charged, arrested and booked inside the Bannock County Jail in Pocatello.

He appeared in front of 6th District Magistrate Judge Paul Laggis for an arraignment hearing on Friday, during which he was ordered to be released from jail on his own recognizance.

Baker is set to appear back in court on June 18 for a preliminary hearing that will involve local prosecutors attempting to prove there is enough evidence against him to elevate the case from the magistrate to district court level for trial.

If convicted of the felony injury to a child charge, Baker faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
