IDAHO FALLS — Charles Thomas Drane was sentenced to prison Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to raping a woman with a mental disability.

District Judge Dane Watkins Jr. handed down a sentence of two-and-a-half years fixed to Drane, with 11 years indeterminate for sexual abuse of a vulnerable adult.

Drane, 40, of Idaho Falls, was arrested in March after the 27-year-old victim said Drane had lured her into his apartment on July 25, 2021, by telling her he had a "gift" from a relative of hers.

When the victim entered the apartment, Drane raped her even as she told him to stop. He then told her that if she told anybody about the rape, he would use a knife to harm her and others.

Court records previously stated the victim's mental abilities were on par with that of a child between the ages of 7 and 11.

Drane denied the accusations when confronted by police. A sexual assault nurse examiner collected DNA from the victim that belonged to a man. A warrant was issued for Drane's DNA, and the two were found to be a match.

Watkins gave Drane credit for the time he had already served in the Bonneville County Jail during court proceedings. He will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release.
