Century 61, Twin Falls 60

    Chase Rowe hit the game-winning layup with eight seconds left as Century shocked Twin Falls 61-60 Wednesday at Twin Falls High School.

    It was the season opener for both teams and a rematch of last season’s 4A state championship game that the Bruins won.

    “We just stayed together,” said Century first-year coach Lester Stewart.

    Century senior Malek Harwell poured in a game-high 20 points, and he had plenty of help. Sheldon Honena-Edmo scored 17 points for the Diamondbacks. Grant Foulger added eight points and Leo Behrend scored seven points.

    Century (1-0) plays Friday at Burley.

Madison 55, Pocatello 52

    A buzzer-beating three-pointer led to a 55-52 loss by Pocatello at the hands of Madison.

    Indians player Riley Whaley, who had 25 points, tied the game at 52 with a three pointer with 15 seconds left, but it was not enough.

    “When a team hits a jumper at the buzzer,” said Pocatello coach Joe Green. “You have to give it credit.”

    Pocatello (0-1) will look to rebound when it plays at Skyline on Friday.

Skyline 76, Shelley 67

    Shelley led at the half, but a sloppy third quarter proved costly and the Russets fell to Skyline 76-67.

    "They came out and attacked the basket," said Shelley coach Dave Hadley. "We went through a stretch with seven turnovers in three minutes. ... We went from up six to down five."

    Carter Cannon scored 23 points for Shelley and Mason Baker had a huge night with 28 for Skyline.

    Shelley (0-1) hosts Bear Lake on Friday.

North Gem 64, Ririe 55

    Four players scored in double figures and North Gem knocked off Ririe 64-55 Wednesday in Bancroft.

    “I’m pretty happy with the hustle and intensity,” said Cowboys coach Charley Kator.

    Tucker Lish led North Gem with five 3-pointers and a game-high 21 points. Walker Davids chipped in 15 points, Jay Sievers had 14 and Karson Lloyd finished with 12 for the Cowboys, who are 1-0 to start the season.

    North Gem (1-0) hosts Grace today.

Snake River 61, South Fremont 29

    Snake River bounced back from a blowout loss to Sugar-Salem and routed South Fremont 61-29 at home.

    The Panthers had three scorers in double figures, led by Ivy Goff and Sari Steadman with 13 apiece.

    Snake River's offense was anemic against Sugar-Salem, but shone brightly against South Fremont.

    "To be honest with you, we couldn't hit sand if we fell off the camel (against Sugar-Salem)," said Snake River coach Rich Dunn. "We made a couple adjustments, tweaked a couple things on offense and we took a little step of that 1,000 mile journey that is a season."

    Snake River (2-2) hosts Teton on next Wednesday.

Challis 53, Bear Lake 41

    Bear Lake got off to a miserable start and could not recover in a 53-41 loss to Challis on Wednesday in Montpelier.

    “Just jitters,” said Bears coach Brian Nate. “They just have to calm down. I have to get them ready for the game.”

    Challis outscored Bear Lake 11-2 in the first quarter. The Bears fought back into the game relying on defense and nine points from Meagan Brogan. The Bears’ Skylee Peterson added six points.

    Bear Lake (0-2) plays Friday at Rich Country, Utah.

Teton 41, Firth 37

    A fourth-quarter comeback was almost complete, but Firth lost a close one 41-37 at home against Teton.

    The Cougars trailed by 12 at halftime and outscored the Redskins by eight in the final period.

    "Offensively, we had some problems there," said Firth coach Sharla Cook. "Really, our defense cost us this game. We had some defensive lapses. We came back nicely but didn’t quite get there."

    Bailey Nelson led Firth in scoring with 13, and Jaycee Jensen and Natalie Jolley were the only other Cougars scorers with 12 points each.

    Firth (5-2) plays at West Side on Friday.

Marsh Valley 52, Malad 26

    Faith Lolofie and Katie Anderson were huge problems for Malad, as Marsh Valley dominated the low post and beat the Dragons 52-26.

    "Their bigs, we didn't have an answer," said Malad coach Bob Sorensen. "They had their way with us."

    Lolofie had 17 and Anderson scored 14. McKenzie Gunter added 12.

    Sadie Simpson led Malad in scoring with eight.

    Malad (1-4) plays at American Falls on Saturday.     Marsh Valley (4-2) hosts South Fremont next Tuesday.

West Jefferson 42, Aberdeen 32

    Aberdeen faced the wrath of a very good West Jefferson team in the second half and lost 42-32.

    The Panthers outscored the Tigers 25-9 in the last 16 minutes of the game after being down 23-17 at the half.

    “I got out-coached,” said Aberdeen coach Ryan Wahlen. “I need to do a better job.”

    Aberdeen (4-3) plays Bear Lake on Saturday.

Grace 37, Rockland 32

    Other than the first quarter, Grace and Rockland played an even ball game.

    "That was our problem tonight," said Rockland coach Vern Nelson. "Grace played good in the first quarter. ... We got some good shots, we just didn't get them to go."

    Jenessa Rigby recorded a double-double with 14 points, 11 of which came in the second half, and 10 rebounds.

    Aspen O'Brien had 11 points and 11 boards to lead the Bulldogs, and Stefani McClanahan had 14 points and seven steals.

    Rockland (3-3, 2-0 1A DII 5-6 District) hosts Clark County on Friday.

    Grace (4-1) plays North Gem at home on Saturday.

Sho-Ban 38, North Gem 27

    North Gem became overcome by exhaustion by the close of the game, leading to a 27-38 defeat by Sho-Ban.

    Most of the Cowboys played in the junior varsity and varsity games. The result was Sho-Ban outscoring North Gem 10-2 in the fourth quarter.

    “They don’t give up,” said North Gem coach Joe Benglan. “They keep trying, even though they’re bodies don’t let them.”

    North Gem (0-3, 0-1 1A D2) plays Grace on Saturday.
