Tyvan Schmitt, the Pocatello man who suffered severe burns in a boat fire at a convenience store on June 25, died on Friday at a Salt Lake City medical center.

Schmitt, 52, was injured last month when a boat on a trailer caught fire after it was filled with fuel at the Phillips 66 at Pocatello Creek and Bench roads. After a friend pulled him out of the boat, Schmitt drove the pickup and burning boat in tow away from the gas pumps, according to family members. 

However, Schmitt suffered severe burns in the fire and needed to be flown by air ambulance to Salt Lake City for medical treatment.

After the fire, a GoFundMe account was set up to help Schmitt and his family with medical and travel expenses, as well as lost wages. As of Saturday night, almost $7,500 had been raised through the online campaign.

Schmitt was a well-known entrepreneur in East Idaho. He spent more than two decades helping local families save money and helping businesses attract new customers through his Pocket Passport Coupon Books for Pocatello and Idaho Falls.
