POCATELLO — Nothing out of the ordinary happened at Idaho State’s first practice of the summer.

That’s exactly how Rob Phenicie wanted it.

ISU’s head coach opened season two of his tenure Wednesday with the start of fall camp, officially marking the beginning of the 2018 season. Over half his team stayed in Pocatello to train over the summer, helping ease any transition from offseason form to preseason shape.

It’s a good thing, because the Bengals’ adjustment period is over. Phenicie has imprinted his coaching style and culture onto the program, and any new coaches have been in place since the spring.

No excuses now.

“We flew around, we knew what we were doing, we knew where to be,” fifth-year quarterback Tanner Gueller said. “I think that was a really good sign for day one.”

Familiar faces littered the ICCU Practice Field outside Holt Arena, and newcomers mostly blended into the background. Gueller and a handful of others began their fifth and final fall camp, while an influx of freshmen and transfers got their first tastes of Division I college football.

Phenicie said it was evident his players were dedicated to their offseason training.

“It wasn’t a complete mess out here,” Phenicie said. “It was sloppy, but we got lined up, we got some snaps, we got some completions. We’re running the right stuff.”

Gueller worked with expected first-team playmakers Mitch Gueller, Michael Dean, Austin Campbell and Tanner Conner. Scooby Reynolds, who may contend for first-team snaps when healthy, was a limited participant. The redshirt junior wide receiver is recovering from his second season-ending knee injury since 2016.

In front of Gueller, Dallen Collins lined up at center, primed to enter his third consecutive season as the starter. Jacob Molenaar was at left guard, and redshirt freshman Jack Tufono was the first-team left tackle. Twenty-seven game veteran and incumbent starter Brian Fineanganofo took second-team reps at left tackle. Preston Holfeltz and Dakota Wilson were the No. 1s at right guard and right tackle, respectively.

“I think it went smooth,” Tanner Gueller said. “Offensively, we completed some balls, we had some good runs and we knew where to be. We didn’t have too many critical errors or guys not knowing where to line up or things like that.

“As an offense, we did a really good job of being efficient, especially for day one.”

ISU’s defense mixed its personnel, but stuck with its familiar 3-4 formation. Fifth-year linebacker Joe Martin was a limited participant 8 1/2 months after suffering a season-ending knee injury in week seven of 2017. Former Boise State walk-on Jace Richter filled in for Martin during certain drills. Richter practiced with ISU’s safeties this spring. Redshirt junior linebacker Kody Graves was a full go with the No. 1 defense after being a non-participant this spring.

Phenicie couldn’t clarify how much Reynolds or Martin will contribute during fall camp. The two missed a combined 13 games last season because of knee injuries.

“Whatever the trainers tell me their availability is, that’s what I do,” Phenicie said.

Tanner Gueller said he has aspirations of a Big Sky Conference title this season — it would be the Bengals’ first since 2002. ISU was picked to finish 12th by the league’s coaches and 10th by media members in this year’s preseason polls.

Can that be the motivation they need?

“Tell them that every coach picked us to finish last? I don’t do that,” Phenicie said tongue in cheek. “I don’t bring that up to them at all. There’s no motivation there.”
