POCATELLO — Mo Rocca, a correspondent for “CBS News Sunday Morning,” visited Pocatello on Tuesday while working on a story about city flags. Pocatello’s flag — which was voted worst in the country by the North American Vexillological Society — is currently being redesigned.

The flag gained national attention thanks to a TED Talk by journalist Roman Mars in 2015, which spurred a local movement to create a new and better flag for Pocatello.

Rocca spent the day exploring Pocatello. He found the trunk that actress Judy Garland said she was born in at the Princess Theater, now the Whitman Building, and visited a local elementary school with Mayor Brian Blad.

Blad, Rocca and his crew visited students at Greenacres Elementary in Pocatello during a lesson on flag design. Students drew their own designs for Pocatello’s new city flag.

“Of course now I’m hoping that one of their flag designs is actually adopted,” said Rocca. “I mean they’re really terrific.”

Rocca said Pocatello has gotten a “bad rap” for its flag since the logo, formerly displayed on a flagpole outside the wastewater treatment facility, was never meant to be a flag at all.

He did say that Milwaukee has a notoriously bad flag, which seems to be here to stay despite two attempts to change it. He said Pocatello’s efforts seem to be going much smoother.

“What’s kind of great is it’s not bogged down in bureaucracy,” said Rocca. “It’s actually happening, in fact it’s happening more quickly than expected.”

Rocca said he has enjoyed his time in Pocatello; he stayed at the Black Swan Inn, which is famous for its themed rooms. Rocca said he had his pick of themes and went with Mayan Rainforest.

“It was wonderful,” said Rocca. “It was kind of like the Mel Gibson movie ‘Apocalypto’ except no one tried to rip my still beating heart out of my chest.”

Rocca also showed off an impressive knowledge of Idaho. He easily named the state bird — the mountain blue bird, state raptor — peregrine falcon, and that Idaho leads the nation in the production of potatoes, trout, lentils and Austrian winter peas.
