POCATELLO — The finishing touches are being finalized on the new Optimist Skate Park, set for its official grand opening on July 25.

The new state-of-the-art facility was made possible thanks to the partnership between the city of Pocatello and the Southeast Idaho Skatepark Association. Designed for skaters of all ages and skill levels, the ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening will be held at 12:15 p.m. on July 25 at 972 N. Seventh Ave in Pocatello.

The new skate park is the result of months of planning that included input from local skateboarders and other recreational sports enthusiasts. Designed by contractor Pillar Design Studios, the 7,000 to 8,000 square foot skate park includes a variety of engaging features such as ramps, ledges, stairs, rails and a 41-foot-long concrete bowl that is 6 feet deep at one end.

The park will also incorporate aspects of the city’s recent rebranding as well as graffiti style design aesthetics and murals from local artists.

The project was financed with $500,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds approved by the City of Pocatello along with a generous $25,000 donation provided by the Southeast Idaho Skatepark Association. Many of the features included were thanks to feedback from area residents such as Deckadence Board Shoppe owner Darin ‘D’Beau’ Black, who supported a deep bowl concept for the park.

A memorial honoring Chevy Nichols, a beloved local skateboard enthusiast who tragically lost his life in August of last year, will also be unveiled during the celebration.

“We are thrilled to get this skate park open and celebrate with our friends at the Southeast Idaho Skatepark Association, the Nichols family, and so many others who helped make this park possible,” said Pocatello Parks and Recreation Director Anne Butler.
