The First Presbyterian Church of Pocatello is hosting two Lenten Recitals to be held March 14 and 21. The community is invited to attend, and there is no charge for the events.

The recitals will begin at noon and last approximately 30 minutes. The musical program will be followed by a soup luncheon. The church is on the corner of South Seventh Avenue and East Lewis Street. Attendees are asked to enter the building through the Lewis Street doors.

The program on March 14 will include performances by Jenna Sumsion and Autumn Harris, students of Dr. Diana Livingston Friedley at Idaho State University. Also included on this program will be organist Gerald Hughes, director of music ministries at the Presbyterian Church.

Coloratura soprano Harris will perform “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth” from Handel’s Messiah. Harris, a vocal performance major at ISU, is accompanied by Alyssa Gardner. Soprano Sumsion will sing “Quia respexit” from Bach’s Magnificat. Sumsion is accompanied by Diane Yerka. Hughes will perform a prelude and fugue by Mendelssohn and a prelude by Bach.

The program on March 21 will feature favorite hymn settings for piano and organ. Pianist Bonnie DeNully will join organist Gerald Hughes in these duets. Included are “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” “Softly and Tenderly,” “Fairest Lord Jesus” and “Jesus, Lover of My Soul.”

These music programs are a way we can take time during our busy schedules to reflect on God’s gift of salvation.
