BOISE — February marks Loneliness Awareness Month at the Idaho Commission on Aging, a time dedicated to raising awareness of the growing loneliness epidemic. The commission aims to promote solutions at the individual, school, workplace and community levels.
Social isolation and loneliness pose urgent public health concerns for the aging population with significant emotional, physical and economic impacts. ICOA encourages Idaho residents, businesses and community groups to take part in activities throughout February and beyond to raise awareness and support those experiencing loneliness. Participants are invited to share their efforts on social media using #IdahoConnects to inspire others and strengthen community connections.
This year, several Idaho organizations are partnering to help reduce loneliness statewide:
— Bridge of Grace is collecting handwritten letters and artwork to include home-delivered meals, offering older adults a personal touch and emotional lift.
— Senior Helpers is collecting Valentine’s Day cards to brighten the day of seniors in our community. Your kind words can make a big difference in someone’s life.
— AARP’s Connect2Affect program continues to provide tools, information and support for seniors experiencing loneliness or social isolation.
Idaho Commission on Aging offers in-person and virtual presentations on the risks of social isolation and loneliness, along with online “Ending Loneliness” learning modules. To schedule a presentation for your organization or event, contact Janet Miller at janet.j.miller@aging.idaho.gov.
