FIRTH — Police confirmed Sunday that a 62-year-old Idaho Falls woman struck by a car on U.S. Highway 91 just north of Firth and transported via air ambulance, later died from her injuries.

Chester Lewis, 68, of Caldwell, was traveling northbound U.S. 91 shortly after 9 p.m. when spotted a large group of people crossing the road, Idaho State Police reported. Lewis attempted to avoid the group by swerving his 1992 Geo Metro.

The Metro struck Frances Montgomery, 62, who was transported to Eastern Idaho Medical Center where she later died.

The accident blocked traffic along U.S. 91 for roughly 90 minutes. Police are still investigation the accident.

Montgomery is the second person to die from injuries sustained in an accident on U.S. 91 this weekend. On Friday evening, at about 9:23 p.m., Arnold Gene Taylor, 42, of Firth, was driving northbound on his motorcycle when he collided with a deer.

Taylor was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene.

About 20 miles south of those incidents, on U.S. 91 in North Bannock County near Chubbuck, another accident was reported early Sunday morning.

During that incident, a Chubbuck man was driving northbound at about 12:25 a.m. on Sunday when he pulled his 1995 Cadillac Deville over and attempted to make a U-turn. His Cadillac was struck by a 1996 Chevy truck, being driving by a man who was also from Chubbuck. 

That man was transported by ground ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center where she was treated for minor injuries and released.

That accident blocked U.S 91 near milepost 85 for a about an hour, police reported.
