Hilghland 4, Twin Falls 3

POCATELLO - What looked to be a blowout turned into a nailbiter, but the Highland girls' soccer team pulled through to stay unbeaten with a 4-3 win over conference rival Twin Falls on Friday at the Bannock County Fairgrounds field.

The Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Bruins rallied to tie things up, but McKenzie Adams played a perfect corner kick to Arial Edwards who headed it home in the 78th minute to give Highland the win.

"That means that they have poise, and they still understand that they can do it," said Highland coach Carlos Flores. "That's the main thing. The girls didn't lose perspective of where they were. That was nice."

Sarah Rominger opened the scoring for the Rams, and Megan Wagner's free kick from 30 yards out made it 2-0 heading into the half.

Kara Wadsworth opened the second half with a goal to make it 3-0 before Twin Falls rallied with three straight goals to tie.

Highland (6-0-1 overall, 3-0-1 5A Districts 4, 5, 6) played without the services of three regulars who are out with injuries.

"The nice thing about it is, we have a team," Flores said. "We don't depend on one player to make or break it. We have plenty of depth."

On Tuesday, the Rams will face a test when they travel across town to face 4A power Century, which is 5-0-1 on the year.

Highland 1, Twin Falls 1

TWIN FALLS - Dustin Hegstrom scored early in the second half to earn Twin Falls a 1-1 draw at home against Highland on Friday in Region Four-Five-Six action.

Highland scored first on a penalty kick in the first half before Hegstrom equalized. The Bruins had a chance to win the game with a penalty kick of their own late on, but it was missed.

Twin Falls (1-6-1, 0-2-1 5A Districts 4, 5, 6) is at Madison Tuesday.

Cross Country

IDAHO FALLS - Six Highland boys medaled to help the Rams boys' cross country team finish second to champion Boise among 5A and 4A schools at the Tiger/Grizz Invitational on Friday in Idaho Falls.

Led by fourth-place finisher Alex Litzsinger, three Rams girls medaled as well, including Emily Tyler and Mariah Meyer. The boys to medal were Daniel Heikkila, Josh Wilson, Chris Lyons, Jacob Hall, Dallin Farnsworth and Tommy Bollinger, who finished fifth overall.

In the 1A/2A/3A division, Bear Lake placed six runners in the top 11, including winner Jessica Leonhardt, who finished the event in 20 minutes, 9 seconds. Her teammates Amelia Crane and Trichelle Schwab finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

On the boys' side, Firth's Caden Portela won the 1A/2A/3A race in a time of 17:18. Bear Lake's Dory Alleman finished in second place, 64 seconds behind Portela.
