IDAHO FALLS - Highland's road to a state title lengthened after its five-set loss to Eagle on Friday in the second round of the 5A volleyball tournament.

Eagle handed Highland the defeat, 23-25, 27-29, 25-23, 25-23, 15-11.

"It was a great match," said Highland coach Deborah Parrish. "(The players) know they played a good match. Eagle had to fight real hard to beat us."

Emma Filiaga led the team with 18 kills in that match. Nikki Meline added 10 kills, Jordan Holman 10 more and Breanne Van Every another nine.

Highland dispatched Timberline in straight sets in the first round before the loss to Eagle.

The Rams will return to Hillcrest High early in the morning for a 9 a.m., loser-out match against Coeur d'Alene.

IDAHO FALLS - Almost the only team Century couldn't solve in the regular season was Bonneville.

That didn't change at the state tournament.

After dispatching Kuna in straight sets in the first round Friday, Century lost to Bonneville in four sets, 25-21, 18-25, 25-18, 25-17, at Skyline High in Idaho Falls. The defeat dropped the Diamondbacks into the back half of the 4A bracket, meaning they'll need to win five matches today if they want to bring home a state title.

Bonneville has handed Century four of its seven losses this season.

"It's rare that you say to a team that they tried too hard," Century coach Alice Heberlein said, "but that caused us to not play in our positions, and we just got out of sync.

"This was their first day at the state tourament, and those nerves sometimes cause you to overplay."

Sophomore Tasi Kelemete paced the D'backs with 19 kills and 10 blocks on the day. Freshman Jenna Ellis and Lynnsie Togiai had 20 and 18 kills, respectively. Senior Sam Bopp added 10 kills, and Kylie Reeder chipped in 33 assists.

Century will start today with a 10:30 a.m. match against Rigby or Wood River.

BURLEY - North Gem extended its state tournament stay with a four-game victory over Camas County on Friday in Burley, 25-15, 25-22, 18-25, 25-18.

That came after North Gem lost a three-game opening-round match against Richfield.

"I don't think we ever really play well in the morning," said North Gem coach Ralph Peterson. "The girls were just plain nervous, and they played that way. This afternoon, they played better."

Erin Christensen led North Gem with two-match totals of 13 assists and 12 kills. Kirsti Christensen added 15 kills, Tiffany Crossley added 10 more, and Chynna Holbrook contributed 14 kills and six blocks. Apsen Holbrook led the team with 18 assists.

North Gem will play Dietrich at 9 a.m. today in a loser-out match.

IDAHO FALLS - Bear Lake lost back-to-back heartbreakers on the opening day of the 3A state tournament Friday at Bonneville High, sending the Bears home after one day.

To open, Kimberly beat Bear Lake 19-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-23, 20-18.

"They played tough - just came up short," said Bears coach Laura Cammack. "We had two games and just couldn't maintain."

Trezlyn Bartschi led the way for Bear Lake with 19 kills, while Shayna Singleton added 20 and Shaelyn Passey 11. Libero Abby Hardcastle anchored the defense with 26 digs.

In a loser-out match later in the day, St. Maries squeaked past the Bears 28-26, 25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 15-6.

"If they get beat in the first two, we usually get beat in three or four," Cammack said. "For us to get beat in the first two and battle back, I was really impressed with them because we haven't done that all year."

Again Bartschi, a senior, led the way with 20 kills.

"She showed a lot of leadership out there and a lot of determination," Cammack said. "A lot of coaches were talking about that."

Passey contributed 18 kills, while freshman Jessica Passey had six kill blocks.
