POCATELLO - In a game they should have dominated from start to finish, it wasn't until late in the third quarter that the Century Diamondbacks turned on the gas and began putting away the Blackfoot Broncos.

Century ended up finishingh the task with a 62-55 win, but not before Blackfoot made it intersting.

The teams were tied at 38-38 with 4:46 to play in the third quarter when the Diamondbacks went on a 10-2 run to finish the quarter. They kept up that pace through most of the fourth quarter, outscoring the Broncos 10-5 through the first five and half minutes.

Tasi Kelemete, the Diamondbacks' 5-foot-11 inch post player, dominated during the fourth-quarter run, scoring eight of the 10 points, including going 2-for-2 at the line. She scored 10 of her 19 points in the final frame.

Century coach Angie Gonzalez said it's part of the team's game plan to get the ball inside to Kelemete. Gonzalez said Kelemete is showing flashes of being the dominant player she believes the junior can be.

"She hasn't played varsity before, but she is really developing," Gonzalez said.

Not to be outdone, Bailey Brown, the Broncos' 5-foot-7 inch guard answered Kelemete's performance by scoring eight points of her own in the final 1:35. Blackfoot's 8-0 run over 1:20 pulled the team within five points of Century with 15 seconds left to play.

Blackfoot coach Mike Kirkham said it wasn't part of an overall plan to get the ball to Brown.

"We don't really have a go-to person. We have a number of tools we can use," Kirkham said. "To go to one player would get away from our team concept."

Brown agreed, and said the high number of baskets during the short time frame was more about being in the right spot at the right time.

"It was more circumstance than intent," she said. "I didn't have a lot of shots early but had several chances at the end."

Kirkham said his team is young, with only five seniors, two of whom have no varsity experience. He knows his team should have struggled to stay with the Diamondbacks.

"I was proud of our team," he said. "We were down 13 points, and they took up the challenge. Both teams played hard."

Gonzalez was also a bit surprised that the game remained so close for so long. She said Blackfoot did a good job double-teaming the wings.

"They played really hard," she said. "We started off really well, but we had a lot of turnovers in the second half."

Gonzalez, who took over at Century last year, said the team is starting to adapt to her up-tempo style but said the team still needs to press for all 32 minutes.

"We are coming along." she said. "Our girls just need to develop that killer instinct."
