Malad 33, West Side 14

DAYTON - Malad defeated West Side 33-14 in their 2A Fifth District matchup Friday, but the loss didn't leave Pirates coach Lyle Henderson overly upset.

The result meant Malad clinched the district's second seed in the playoffs, but West Side (5-3, 2-2 2A Fifth District) also will go on to play in the postseason as its third seed, against the Sixth District champion.

"At least it doesn't end the season for us," Henderson said after the Pirates' final regular-season game. "We have the opportunity to play another game."

Malad (6-1, 2-1) led 20-14 entering the fourth quarter but wore down West Side with two touchdowns. Braiden Jones scored his second rushing touchdown of the game and added a 13-yard touchdown reception from Kaden Goddard to seal the win.

Jones finished with 169 rushing yards on 24 carries, and Goddard completed 14-of-18 passes for 172 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

"Braiden and the offensive line were both awesome," Malad coach McKay Young said. "And Kaden threw the ball great all night. The receivers did a good job of catching the ball."

As the second seed, Malad will play the Fourth District's second seed in first round of the playoffs.

Grace 20, Soda Springs 14

GRACE - Grace won its first football game in three seasons when it defeated Soda Springs 20-14 on Friday in its homecoming game.

The Grizzlies (1-6, 1-2 2A Fifth District) trailed 14-6 at halftime but scored a touchdown in each of the last two quarters to overcome the Cardinals (0-7, 0-3).

"They finally found out they can win coming from behind," Grace coach Todd Kap said. "I was just so proud of them that they didn't give up, and they kept fighting hard."
