Richfield 60, Rockland 14

RICHFIELD - Rockland struggled to contain Richfield's running game and dropped a 60-14 decision Friday at Richfield in a game that was called midway through the third quarter due to the mercy rule.

Richfield gained 359 yards on the ground, with Michael Lezamiz rushing for 147 of those on nine carries on his way to a four-touchdown performance. Three of those came in the first quarter, and Rockland (1-7) trailed 38-0 after the period.

Rockland's two touchdowns came on Richie Turnbeaugh passes to Tyler O'Brien, who finished with 3 catches for 68 yards. Jake Spillett carried the ball 12 times for 88 yards.

North Gem 67, Jackpot (Nev.) 20

BANCROFT - The North Gem players had never seen the unusual formation Jackpot (Nev.) was lining up in across from them Friday.

Jackpot employed the Swinging Gate formation, in which four offensive linemen and a running back lined up on one sideline and receivers on the opposite side, leaving the quarterback and center exposed in the middle of the field.

North Gem surrendered an early touchdown to that formation but quickly recovered to blast Jackpot 67-20 at home. The Cowboys led 24-14 after the first quarter but conceded just one other touchdown the rest of the way.

"They caught us off guard at the beginning of the game," North Gem coach Kevin Carey said. "It took us a while to adjust."

Jackpot, on the other hand, failed to adjust to North Gem's running game, with eight of the Cowboys' nine scores coming on the ground. The other came from Tyler McLain's 70-yard interceptin return in the third quarter.

Mitchel Hall and Taylow Askew led the Cowboys (4-3) with 77 and 61 yards on the ground, respectively.

"We've got some really good backs, and our line has been blocking excellent," Carey said. "We're turning the corner. We're getting to where we're a good football team."
