Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Bayern Munich have nothing on these kids.

    The Portneuf Valley Soccer Club U16 Galaxy boys won the Idaho State Cup tournament Saturday afternoon in Idaho Falls, 4-2 over FC Nova (Boise) — the group’s third state championship in four years.

    And the season they didn’t win a state title, they fell in the championship match.

    Indeed an era of dominance has descended upon Idaho at the hands — or feet — of a group of kids from southeast Idaho.

    “They have this attitude that we have to win,” said head coach Jamshid Roomiany. “They know what it takes to win. It’s a champion’s attitude. We went through some hardship, but we bonded together and did it.”

    Against FC Nova, Cade Roske scored the Galaxy’s first goal, it coming in the opening half. Tyler Hoffa added another in the second.

    The two teams went into extra time tied 2-2, which meant two 10-minute periods would be played. Those two goals were the only ones it allowed by the Galaxy during the entire tournament.

    Hoffa netted what turned out to be the game-winner in the first overtime period, and Daniel Mende banged home another in the closing seconds to seal the victory.

    “They were very, very excited,” team manager Jennifer Parker said of the team’s reaction after winning. “They rushed the field and had a celebration at midfield. The sideline was quite full of spectators, and they all celebrated as well.”

    The Galaxy add this year’s championship to the one earned in 2012 (U15) and 2010 (U13).

    Even more impressive is the fact that this group did it without the Lowe brothers — Trent, Tevin and Terrell — who are currently attending a soccer residential academy in Arizona.

    But the PVSC Galaxy, — comprised of students from Century, Pocatello, Blackfoot, Snake River, Skyline and Idaho Falls High Schools — rose to the occasion when it mattered most.

    “Nobody thought we were going to be able to do this. They didn’t give us much credit,” Roomiany said. “Every tournament we played in, we didn’t get put in good brackets. That’s how they judged us.

    “We lost a few games (this season), but we peaked this tournament. The team came together, they wanted to win and they did. We were as physical as any other team.”

    The Galaxy is also developing a knack for beating teams from Boise. Three Treasure Valley squads were in the final four of the tournament.

    “We frustrated the heck out of the other teams,” Roomiany said. “The Boise teams are doing everything to beat us, but they couldn’t.”

    The title qualifies the kids for the Far West Regional Championship, which will be held in Hawaii this year. Because of high travel costs, PVSC Galaxy has opted out of the event.

    But the still players have plenty to keep them excited.

    “We are state champions. Nobody can take that away from us,” Roomiany said. “We were there to win. Overall it was a magnificent accomplishment for us.

    “I hope we’ll be able to repeat this again next year.”
