Century 35, Preston 7

    With a win over Preston and a Bonneville loss to Rigby, the Century Diamondbacks are in second place in the district and control their own postseason destiny.

    “We started fast,” said Century head coach Dave Spillet. “Shane (Rominger) threw the ball well (and) kept the chains moving.”

    The D-backs capitalized on three first-half turnovers to set up the Century offense.

    “We tried to get into a rhythm, and tonight I felt like we really got into a good rhythm,” Spillet said. “We’ve been getting better and better each week.”

    Spillet credits the defense for not just creating turnovers, but stifling the Preston offense.

    “They did a great job. All 11 guys were just flying around,” he said. “They stuck with their assignments. They did their job.”

    Century (5-3, 3-1 4A 5-6 District) takes on Pocatello Friday in Holt Arena at 7 p.m.

American Falls 34, Marsh Valley 27

    With the 5th District’s third bid into the 3A state playoffs on the line, American Falls squeezed past Marsh Valley 34-27.

    “We just put together a full game,” said American Falls head coach Tyler Shafer. “We used the emotion of senior night. Marsh Valley fought every step of the way.”

    The Beaver win pits them against 6th District champion Shelley Thursday at Holt Arena. Shafer isn’t deterred by Shelley’s status is district champions.

    “We should think of it as a good opportunity to play Shelley,” Shafer said. “Extending their season is what we talked about, and I think that really did help motivate them.”

5A state tournament

Highland 3, Post Falls 0

    The Highland Rams returned with a vengeance.

    After dropping their opening round game at the 5A Girls Soccer Tournament Thursday, the Rams blasted Post Falls 3-0 Friday in the loser’s bracket at Meridian High School.

    Our defense was not good yesterday,” said Highland head coach Korbie Vaughan. “Today, we did everything right.”    

    Senior Makenzie Van Sickle recorded all three of the Rams goals for a hat trick and senior Reece Bauer assisted each goal. In Highland’s two games at state, Van Sickle has four goals.

    “I think my seniors didn’t want it to be their last game,” Vaughan said. “We have a new goal now. We’re trying to get two wins at state.”

    Highland plays Lake City at 10 a.m. today in the consolation match.

4A state tournament

Bishop Kelly 4, Century 0

    Century had moments where they attacked, but the Diamondbacks ultimately fell behind in the first 10 minutes and weren’t able to come back against Bishop Kelly in the 4A semifinals.

    “I can’t say they didn’t play hard,” said Century head coach Jamshid Roomiany of his players. “They don’t have their heads down. They played really hard, and that’s how it is.”

    Though Bishop Kelly scored on what Roomiany deemed a “soccer goal” to put Century in a 1-0 hole, the next three goals scored were the results of defensive breakdowns.

    “The defense didn’t have that much intensity,” Roomiany said. “We gave three  defensive-mistake goals.”

    The Diamondbacks’ loss places them in the third-place match against Middleton today at 1 p.m. at Brothers Park in Caldwell.

Twin Falls 3, Blackfoot 1

    The Blackfoot girls’ season is over after a 3-1 loss to Twin Falls.

    Twin Falls’ Maddie Watkins scored twice, and Peyton Karl scored once. Cassandra Clarke scored for Blackfoot off a Meaghan Collard assist, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Broncos in the postseason. Blackfoot’s Madison Leslie had 10 saves.

3A state tournament

Community School 3, Marsh Valley 1

    Three players scored for Community School in its 3-1 win over Marsh Valley.

    The Eagles’ Jacinta May scored once for Marsh Valley, and MacKayla Vieweg posted 15 saves.

    Marsh Valley takes on Filer today in the third-place match at 1 p.m. at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.

4A state tournament

Preston 2, Emmett 1

    Preston scored twice in the first half and held off Emmett in the last 15 minutes to preserve a win and move on to the 4A Boys Soccer Tournament consolation match against Caldwell.

    The Indians got on the board in rapid succession — Jackson Hobbs scored off a Seth Stockdale assist in the 31st minute, and Jorge Sanchez scored in the 33rd off an assist from Eli Ramirez.

    "We came out and played really well in the first half," said Preston head coach Robert Bowles.

    After Emmett scored in the 62nd minute, Adam Scott and the rest of the Preston back line kept the net clean to hold on for the win.

    "The defense over the course of the last two days has played really well," Bowles said. "They've been smart and absorbed pressure."

    Preston's consolation match against Caldwell is today at 11 a.m. at Brothers Park in Caldwell.

Caldwell 1, Century 0

    One Omar Gonzalez goal was all Caldwell needed to usher Century out of the 4A state tournament.

    Century’s Mauricio Huerta had seven saves. The Century loss prevents the Diamondbacks from facing district-rival Preston in the state tournament’s consolation match.

Weiser 8, American Falls 1

    American Falls wasn’t able to contain a spread-out Weiser offense.

    Six different players scored for Weiser, and American Falls’ Jose Mata scored once in the 8-1 loss. American Falls’ Miguel Mata had 19 saves.

    The Beavers will take on Sugar-Salem today in the third-place game today at 1 p.m. at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.

Volleyball

Bonneville 3, Pocatello 0

    Poky gave Bonneville all it could, but the Indians ended up falling in three sets, 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 in the opening round of the 4A 5-6 District Tournament.

    “They played really well tonight,” said Pocatello head coach Kolay Sutton. “It’s a good time to be peaking. It was really fun to watch.”

    Darian Romasko had seven kills and three blocks. Melyce Hege had eight kills.

    Sutton believes the playing the No. 1 seeded Bonneville Bees so tight can help fuel a Pocatello rally as the tournament progresses.

    “I think competing against a great team like Bonneville is a really great confidence builder,” she said. “I told them, ‘If you play that way tomorrow, good things will happen for you.’”

    Pocatello takes on Blackfoot today at 11:30 a.m. at Rigby High School.

Century 3, Preston 0

Century 3, Blackfoot 0

    Century breezed through both Preston and Blackfoot in straight sets to create a rematch against Bonneville in the 4A 5-6 District Tournament.

    Century beat Preston 25-9, 25-6, 25-13 before downing Blackfoot 25-11, 25-8, 25-10. The D-backs had a attack percentage of .423 against Preston. Against Blackfoot, that attack percentage was .435.

    Overall, it was a night of solid volleyball from Century.

    “From the very first serve, the Diamondbacks were on point,” said Century head coach Pauline Thiros. “We’ve been working hard in practice really attacking all the hitters on offense.”

    Kayla Ellis led in Friday’s action with 28 kills. Henny Hearn had 16 and Baily Permann 13. Jacqueline Cuttlers had 24 digs, Ellis had 22 and Micquel Blattner had 19. Sami Parris had 58 assists.

    Today at 1 p.m. at Rigby High School, Century faces Bonneville in the semifinals, a team the D-backs lost to in straight sets in the regular season. Thiros feels confident the Diamondbacks are playing some of their best volleyball to date, and she’s looking forward to the matchup.

    “We know what they’re good at, and we’ve been working hard to counter that since the last time we played them,” she said. “I see a dog fight tomorrow. I think it’s going to be a very competitive match.

    “It’s definitely going to be a rough day, and after tonight’s perfection and the way we practiced all week, I feel really ready for it.”
