    After 43 combined hits and 17 errors, the Marsh Valley Eagles outlasted Sugar-Salem 16-15 Friday at Marsh Valley High School.    

    “It was our first game and our pitcher is a freshman,” said Marsh Valley head coach Tina Morrison. “It was a really close game, and we were really nervous starting, so I’m happy how they finished the game.”

    The Eagles trailed by one run in the bottom of the seventh, but the lively Marsh Valley bats took advantage of Digger mistakes all afternoon and scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

    Marsh Valley (1-0) plays Soda Springs today at 11 a.m.

Pocatello 5, Madison 0

    It had been a little while since the Pocatello High School softball team had the chance to play a game thanks in part to Mother Nature.

    But on the opening day of ISG tournament in Boise the Indians appeared to show no signs of rust.

    Kealee Hewatt went 6-for-8 at the plate with six RBI and Alex Kordopatis struck out 28 hitters on the day as Pocatello defeated Madison 5-0, and tied with defending state champ Skyview 5-5 Friday afternoon.

    “We absolutely hit the ton out of the ball today,” Pocatello head coach Anne Butler said. “Kealee was on a tear at the plate. We had nine hits in the first game and 11 in the second, so it was a good offensive day for us.”

    Kordopatis tossed a one-hitter in the opening and struck out 16 in the opening game against Madison. She added another 12 K’s in game two.

    Pocatello finishes the ISG tournament today with games against Meridian at 10 a.m. and Boise at 2 p.m. Both games will be played at Meridian High School.    

Eagle 5 Highland 2

Highland 6, Rocky Mountain 4

    In Highland softball’s first two games of the season, the Rams lost to Eagle 5-2 and knocked off Rocky Mountain 6-4 in the ISG tournament at Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian.

    “The girls were really excited,” said Highland head coach Tisha Coverdell. “They went into the games with confidence.”

    Junior Kali McMinn pitched both game and allowed six runs on 13 hits.

    Kim Martin, a Highland senior, stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh against Rocky Mountain with the Rams down one.

    Two runners were on base and Martin blasted her first home run of the season for the walk off win.

    Today, Highland is at Centennial High School in Boise to play Lewiston at noon and Timberline at 2 p.m.

Pocatello 6, Meridian 5

Borah 9, Pocatello 3

    The Pocatello High School baseball team earned a split on the second day of the Bucks Bags tournament in Boise Friday.

    Matt Cose threw six strong inning as the Indians defeated Meridian 6-5 in the opening game of the day.

    A five-run second proved too much to overcome in the second game as the Indians fell to Borah 9-3.

    “I like the way we played today,” Pocatello head coach Vinnie Benavidez said. “We hit the ball well, we left a lot of guys on base but we have struggled getting guys on base all season.”

    Jacob Oblea went 4-for-6 on the day and Bodie Cooper added another three hits.

    Pocatello (5-2) finishes the tournament today against Vallivue at 10:30 a.m. at Fort Boise.
