The Malad softball team earned a pair of wins Friday, but also suffered a loss.

    The Dragons defeated St. Maries 14-0, fell to McCall 17-11 and beat New Plymouth 9-8.

    “The first game we played really well and dominated it,” said Malad head coach Scott Ray. “We had 13 hits, and a lot of them were extra bases. The next game we just were off.

    “We turned right back around and went again against a great team and won. It wasn’t anything we did wrong, we were just off and it didn’t click.”

    The Dragons can still claim a state championship, but they will have to win four games today to make it happen.

    “It’s a long road, but we can still win it,” Ray said.

    Malad begins that long road by taking on West Jefferson today at 10 a.m. at Orofino Elementary School.

    “We’re coming back,” Ray said.

Baseball

    After watching its hopes of three-peating as state champs get dashed by Grangeville Thursday, Malad bounced back for a 15-0 win over Wendell at Rodeo Park in Nampa.

    Kyle Daniels and Cort Goddard combined to no-hit the Trojans and help push the Dragons into the consolation championship game.

    “We wanted to go and three-peat, but that won’t happen,” Malad head coach Dennis Evans said. “We have had a lot of fun and played really well and now our focus is to go and win the consolation championship.”

    Malad pounded out 14 hits, including five doubles, to build a 14-0 lead after two innings.

    Daniels went 3-for-4 in the game with an RBI. Nishon Neal and Zach Jeppsen each added two hits and a combined five RBI.

    Malad takes on Melba today at 10 a.m. at Rodeo Park.
