The sponsor of the Justin Hebblethwaite Memorial two-man scramble was not on hand to witness all the low scores Saturday. Lee Hebblethwaite was in a Utah hospital instead, battling what was described as a brain aneurysm which struck him a day earlier.

    It was ironic, since he had announced this would be the last time the tournament honoring his late son would take place. But in the best tradition of the first-day scramble, Bob Peters and Dan Pickens collected 12 birdies and an eagle for a round of 58. The second round will be Sunday.

    Peters gave credit to Pickens for excellent putting which carried the team Saturday. But Pickens returned the compliment.

    “When Bob knocked it three feet from the pin with his approaches, sure, I could make the putt. He could have had about 60 on his own ball.”

    They started their round with birdies on their first seven holes, and got five more on their back nine before capping their round with an eagle 3 on the 18th.

    There was a three-way tie at 61 among the twosomes of Drew Damron-Greg Long, Ryan and Ty Pearson, and Brian Atkinson-Tony Wilson.

    The Damron-Long duo started the round with four birdies, and also birdied four of the first five holes on the back nine. The Pearsons similarly were under par on four consecutive holes going out, and had four of five on the back. Atkinson and Wilson carded five birdies on the front nine, had an eagle on the 10th and finished with birdies on their last three holes.

    K. Buttars and C. Oliverson led the First Flight with 60, three ahead of B. McInelly and D. Mitani. A. Sluder and J. Smith were atop the Second Flight with 64, and J. and W. Losee paced the Third Flight with 65. (Late scores were unavailable.)
