Six pitchers, 24 hits, 17 runs, 10 innings but one is the biggest number of them all — at least when there’s a game-winning inside park of the home run.
The Blackfoot Broncos outlasted the Pocatello Rebels 11-6 in 10 innings, Thursday night, after Cody Evans’ blasted a three-RBI inside-the-park, race-to-homeplate home run that finally broke the Rebels.
In the doubleheader, Blackfoot took game one 13-1.
The Rebels (7-21) are getting better, just don’t judge their progress off two more losses.
Instead, focus on how Pocatello’s youngest Legion A baseball team bounced back from a 12-run trouncing — a game where the Rebels undid their own chances by committing six defensive errors — to take the Broncos, the top team in the West region, all the way to the brink.
The Rebels found ways to reach base against Blackfoot’s pitching (evidence: See 11 stranded baserunners in game one) all night. Whether it was Austin Aguinaga going 2 for 4 in game two, Dillon Rees picking up two hits or Trystan Villano adding a pair of singles.
But Pocatello, with runners in scoring position, could never find the key hit — the blooper that falls into the gap or a hard-line drive that skates past the diving infielder.
Well, until the sixth inning of the second game. Down 4-1, Saben Rodriguez bunted with runners on first and second. Blackfoot’s pitcher, Zach Later, elected to gun out Rees as he chugged from second to third.
But the throw was high. Rees scored and the rally was on. Hall smashed an RBI single to center field and another fielding error allowed Rodriguez to sprint home, too.
In total, the Rebels piled on five runs in the sixth to take their first lead of the night. Blackfoot, however, refused to fold. Later, hitting leadoff for the Broncos, whipped an RBI triple to left field that rolled all the way to the wall. Later was a terror for Rebel pitching all night, going 4 for 7.
And in extra innings, Blackfoot’s Brady Pearson and Brady Trappett combined to pitch four scoreless innings to hold off the Rebels until Evans’ home run.
The Rebels are right back into action today versus Shelley in a doubleheader at Halliwell Park starting at 5 p.m.
