    Every No. 1 team in the state retained its hold on the top ranking in the Idaho Prep Football Media Poll released Wednesday.

    Highland, off a heart-racing 24-21 victory over Coeur d’Alene last Saturday in Holt Arena is the No. 1 team in 5A. Rocky Mountain, with four first-place votes, is a close No. 2 and the Vikings, sitting at 1-3 overall, remain at No. 3 for the second week in a row.

    For the first time this season, 4-0 Idaho Falls cracks the top five at No. 5.

    Bishop Kelly is No. 1 in the 4A ranks. Bonneville checks in at No. 3, Rigby No. 4 and Century received four points.

    In the 3A ranks, Fruitland is still the top-ranked squad, but the Grizzlies have company. Off a 41-14 pasting of Pocatello last Friday night, the Shelley Russets join Fruitland at No. 1.

    Off a bye, 3-0 Snake River moved up one spot to No. 3

    In class 2A, the top five are identical to the previous week except that West Side is tied with Marsing for the third spot. Last week, the Pirates, 3-1 overall, were ranked fourth.

    Undefeated Butte County and Salmon River are ranked No. 1 in 1A-1 and 1A-II, respectively.

Boys soccer

Hillcrest 9, Pocatello 0

    The Hillcrest Knights were too big and too fast for the Pocatello Indians in a 9-0 shutout Wednesday in Idaho Falls.

    “We actually got around the goal in the first half, but we didn’t have anybody really that could keep up with them on the outside,” said Pocatello head coach George Asboe.

    Pocatello (1-11 overall, 0-4 5A 5-6 District) hosts Rigby Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Hawthorne Park.

Volleyball

Idaho Falls 3, Highland 0

    In a close battle, the Idaho Falls Tigers beat the Highland Rams 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 Wednesday in Idaho Falls.

    “It was good. They battled and they fought hard,” said Highland head coach Morgan Rose. “They came out and they showed well. It’s just those stretches of three or four errors in a row that put us behind in a set.”

    After the match, Rose said libero Ashley Orr had a great game. The junior finished with 23 digs.

    Jessica Partner had 12 digs and six kills. Ashlyn Van Every and Aly Mabey combined for 13 assists. Van Every added eight digs and five kills. Senior Ali’iana Kelemete had three blocks.

    Highland (7-10 overall, 2-2 5A 5-6 District) travels to the Bonneville Classic Friday and Saturday. The Rams opening match of the tournament is at Sandcreek Middle School at 3 p.m.
