The Holy War has reached a new level of insanity.

    It sounds almost impossible, but the ending to Saturday night’s BYU vs. Utah football game may have been the craziest ending in the history of the rivalry.

    It had everything: A potential game-winning field goal, a blocked field goal, (out of their mind) fans rushing the field prematurely, another potential game-winning field goal, the sound of pigskin hitting the hollow metal of a goal post and of course, fans embarrassing themselves while once again rushing the field.

    In case you missed it, this year’s Holy War was out of this world. Let me break it down. BYU finds itself behind 24-7 going into the fourth quarter in Salt Lake City, but comes storming back to get within three points near the end of the game.

    Pinned deep in their own territory with just over a minute remaining, the Cougars get a deep completion to set up a 51-yard field goal attempt. It gets blocked and the Utah fans in attendance go nuts, storming onto the field to celebrate.

    The ball was still live during the Utes’ bum rush of the grass as J.D. Falslev picked up the ball and tried to run it.

    For those keeping score at home, that’s a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, this coming straight out of the rule book. The call gave BYU another shot at tying up the game, this time with a 36-yard attempt.

    The kick looked good in the air, but bent as it approached the yellow metal structure before clanking off the left goal post.

    The Holy War went to Utah for the third time in a row and seventh out of the last 10 played. This despite the best effort of the schools’ fans to hand it to the Cougars.

    I’m not sure what was going through the heads of those Utes at Rice-Eccles Stadium, but it was embarrassing.

    Storming the field is a classic right of passage where fans feel like they are part of the action, mainly in college football. It’s fun if done correctly and with a bit of good taste and decency. Unfortunately that almost never happens and generally ends with fans harassing or ridiculing individuals from the losing team.    

    Such was the case in Salt Lake City.

    A Ute fan in suspenders (yes suspenders) was caught on video yelling something at BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall, which caused Mendenhall to stop in his tracks, turn and give the kid a death glare. The fan bailed on the situation and ran faster than you can say “the 80’s want their suspenders back.”

    The kid has since defended his actions on the Facebook page of a Salt Lake area radio station.

    I had assumed that the fan had just been caught up in the moment of a big win and in his state of euphoria, did something regrettable. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, even though I was surprised that someone would do something so uncouthe and, for lack of a better term, stupid.

    But once I read his comments, my surprise disappeared.

    I am 100 percent positive that not all Utah fans are similar to this individual. But judging by how a large portion of them almost cost their team a game against their hated rival, I have my doubts.

    In the end the better team won. At least I think Utah is the better team. Then again Utah State did beat the Utes the weekend before.

    Maybe it’s a tie.

    Or maybe it’s just a new level of crazy that has worked itself in the Holy War.

    Just when you think it’s not going to get any more exciting, it does.

    Then fans rush the field and do their best to screw it up.
