    Century took down four teams, all in straight sets, to be crowed Skyline Classic Volleyball Invitational Champions.

    Before the Diamondbacks took down Hillcrest in two sets for the title, they defeated Idaho Falls, Madison and Timberline.

    Century head coach Pauline Thiros was more than pleased with her team’s performance.

    “Communication was good. Offense was good. Passing was great,” she said. “All of our opponents were very good, solid 5A opponents, so I think we feel good about beating all of them today.”

    Taking the place of injured libero Jacqueline Cuttlers was Micquel Blattner, who had 39 digs on the day.

    But perhaps the player of the day was Kayla Ellis, who racked up 71 kills, 47 digs, five blocks and three aces.

    “I’d be surprised if she’s not tournament MVP,” Thiros said.

    Sami Parris recorded 124 assists and 26 digs, Becky Christensen had 24 kills and Henny Hearn had 32 kills and 11 blocks.

    One aspect of the Diamondback’s game that Thiros has been working on is the blocking. During the tournament, it shined.

    “Probably our biggest factor today was our blocking kicked in,” Thiros said. “The middle did a great job of closing the block, and our right side did a great job of setting the block.

    “It was just a good, solid day all the way around.”

    Century (20-2, 2-0 4A 5-6 District) heads to Blackfoot Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Girls soccer

    In the heat, Century survived to win a 1-0 battle with Twin Falls Saturday at Twin Falls High School.

    Senior Macy Goodwin provided the winning goal in the 60th minute.

    “Overall, a great game. A very physical, back and forth game,” said Century head coach Jamshid Roomiany. “The team is coming together.”

    Century (3-2-1) travels to Preston Thursday for a match at 4:30 p.m.

Cross country

    Elijah Armstrong was at it again.

The Pocatello junior won the varsity A boys race at Tiger-Grizz Invitational Friday at Freeman Park in Idaho Falls, posting the lone sub-16-minute time of the day.

"Another great day for Elijah," said Pocatello head coach Shannon Whitmer. "It's not an easy course."

According to athletic.net., Armstrong's time of 15 minutes and 47.8 seconds is the fastest in the state, regardless of classification.

As a team, Pocatello finished second, one point behind Bozeman (Mont.). Driztin Herndon was fifth (16:50.96) and Haydin Herndon checked in at 11th (17:00.42).

"A loss sucks, but that one point teaches you that you always have to go get that guy in front of you," Whitmer said.

Still, though, in a 30-team division, defeating Mountain View, Rocky Mountain and others is a positive sign for the Indians.

On the boys side, Century finished 22nd, Bear Lake 23rd and Blackfoot 25th.

The Soda Springs boys and girls both won the varsity B races.

The Cardinals Kelsey Yamauchi, in 19:50.9, took second overall. Shelley's Austin Stewart won the boys B race (16:53.3).

In the girls varsity A race, Pocatello was the top finishing squad with 190 points.

"We were the No. 1 4A school in our group," Whitmer said, "and we have one senior in our top five. The goal is to make state. It would be really great to make it after missing last year. They really deserve it."
