RIGBY — Sacks turned into touchdowns. Goal-line drives ended in turnovers. Nothing went right for Century.

The Diamondbacks opened their 2015 season with a 33-7 loss Friday at Rigby. When most schools played a non-conference opponent to find their footing, the D-backs and first-year head coach Travis Hobson got an unpleasant taste of district action against the Trojans.

And from the opening minutes, Century was playing catch-up, literally chasing Hayden Livingston all over the field.

The senior Rigby (1-0, 1-0 District 5-6) quarterback escaped pressure in the backfield, found an edge and sprinted 75 yards on third down of the Trojans’ first possession. Sixty-three seconds into the game, the D-backs were down 6-0.

On Rigby’s next drive, Livingston scampered eight yards for another score. That made it 13-0 Trojans.

And the very next time he touched the ball, Livingston weaved away from Century’s defense and housed a 77-yard run. Before he completed a pass, Livingston racked up 160 yards and Century was in a 20-0 hole.

The Diamondbacks (0-1, 0-1 District 5-6) were aggressive on defense and usually found space to get into the backfield. But Livingston calmly stepped up and made them pay.

“We were in position to make plays,” Hobson said. “Two of Livingston’s long runs were tackle for losses that we just couldn’t bring him down.”

When Livingston finally completed a pass midway through the second quarter, it was just as deadly. Livingston found Kyler Buckway for a 21-yard score to push Rigby’s lead to 27-0.

Meanwhile, Century’s offense sputtered and Kayembe was bottled up before he found a hole nearly every time he got the ball.

The senior tailback, who’s been offered a scholarship to play at the College of Southern Idaho, finished the first half with five yards on 10 carries. Rigby defenders muscled their way past Century’s offensive line and swarmed Kayembe in the backfield. The D-backs had to abandon the run. Kayembe was handed the ball three times in the second half.

Kayembe, the workhorse of Century’s offense, finished with 16 rushing yards on 13 carries.

“It’s frustrating, but I’ve always got to do better,” Kayembe said. “At the end of the day, if I want to be a leader I’ve just got to make plays. We might not have had things go our way up front, but sometimes it comes down to me just making plays.”

Century’s first trip to the red zone came late in the first quarter. A 26-yard screen pass from Chris Hansen to Dallin Blaser set the D-backs up with a first-and-goal from the 8. Kayembe ran three times, Hansen ran once and Century turned the ball over on downs without netting a single yard.

In the fourth quarter, trailing 33-0, Century had first-and-goal from the 1. A 1-yard loss, incomplete pass and a fumble spoiled another opportunity for the Diamondbacks to score.

“You get on that 1-foot line and you can’t punch it in, that’s about as hard to deal with as a coach as anything,” Hobson said.

Century broke through with five minutes and change left in the final period. Hansen completed a 14-yard strike to Bridger Gunter to wipe the zero off the board.

Hobson new Rigby would be a tough out. The Trojans made it to the 4A state semifinals last season and should make another postseason run this year. He cited mental errors as a reason for missed opportunities.

“We’ve got to find a way to overcome those mental obstacles and the physical obstacles,” he said. “I think we had the game plan to do it. We just couldn’t execute the key plays.”

Added Kayembe: “It’s the little things. It’s the mental mistakes we made that cost us.”

Hansen finished 19 of 39 for 222 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Blaser hauled in five receptions for 82 yards and Hansen rushed for a team-high 22 yards on five carries.

Livingston went 5 of 14 through the air for 138 yards and two scores. He added 180 rushing yards and three touchdowns on five carries.

It wasn’t the start Hobson was hoping for, and the Diamondbacks won’t get many tune-up opportunities. Century plays at Minico next week before taking on defending 5A champion Highland and hosting 4A runner-up Blackfoot.

No more little mistakes.

“If we can fix those up, if we can fix up our attitude, I think we’ll be able to bounce back pretty well,” Kayembe said.
