Pocatello junior quarterback Will Schumber threw for 404 yards and five touchdowns, but the Indians couldn’t hold on to a fourth-quarter lead in a 38-32 loss Friday at Twin Falls.

Schumber hit 10 different receivers and Pocatello moved the ball all game, accumulating 564 total yards of offense. Junior Jarom Campos caught nine passes for 177 yards and senior Antwon Johnson snagged 10 catches for 122 yards.

“That’s not a game you typically lose when you control that game that much,” said Indians coach Dave Spillett.

But Pocatello did lose, because Twin Falls outscored the Indians 26-0 in the fourth quarter. The Bruins ran for 326 yards on 44 carries.

Pocatello had four turnovers in the red zone.

“I hate to say we give away the game because Twin Falls was out there battling, too,” Spillett said. “But it was a game that we should have had for sure. You just can’t have that many mistakes.”

Pocatello (0-1) takes on Highland on Friday in the Black and Blue Bowl.

HILLCREST 41, BLACKFOOT 27

Hillcrest led 7-0 after the first quarter and 34-6 at half on the way to a dominating 41-27 win over Blackfoot on Friday in Idaho Falls.

The Knights’ Bridger Blakeslee completed 9 of 11 passes for 223 yards and ran for another 119 yards on the ground.

Blackfoot senior receiver Taylor Pearson hauled down six catches for 147 yards, but the Knights kept the Broncos’ passing attack in check. Blackfoot junior quarterback Pacen Hayes finished 11 for 27 for 201 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Blackfoot (0-1) plays Friday at Skyline.

SNAKE RIVER 49, SOUTH FREMONT 33

Wyatt Vogler scored four touchdowns to lead Snake River to a 49-33 win at South Fremont.

The Panthers put the game away early, jumping out to a 35-13 lead at halftime. 

Vogler had 189 yards rushing on 22 carries in addition to the TDs. 

Snake River (1-0) travels to Shelley on Friday.

ABERDEEN 48, AMERICAN FALLS 20

Rivin Mack ran for 108 yards and three touchdowns as No. 4 Aberdeen upended American Falls 48-20 Friday at home.

“We were a little rusty but we still did pretty good,” said Tigers coach Jeff Duffin. “We were just really physical. I was really happy with our line tonight, especially our defensive line.”

The Tigers held American Falls to 119 rushing yards. Mack was one of six tailbacks who picked up yards on the ground for Aberdeen. Hillario Carrillo had 40 yards and a touchdown, and the senior picked up four defensive sacks the first half.

Aberdeen (1-0) hosts Wendell on Friday.

BEAR LAKE 44, COKEVILLE (Wyo.) 7

Bear Lake could not have started worse, allowing a 60-yard touchdown run up the gut to start its game against Cokeville (Wyo.).

But the Bears rebounded swiftly and won 44-7 at home Friday.

“They got the job done,” said Bear Lake coach Ryan Messerly. “Defensively, we were phenomenal.”

The varsity teams played the first three quarters, while the JV teams from both schools took the field in the fourth. Quarter. The score entering the final period was 38-7.

Bear Lake hosts Sugar-Salem next Friday.

WEST JEFFERSON 34, SODA SPRINGS 0

Soda Springs lost 34-0 to West Jefferson at home Friday.

Cardinals coach Cliff Garbett was still impressed with his team, despite being blown out.

“We played pretty well tonight,” he said. “We got down in the red zone three times, had opportunity to score. Just did not capitalize on them.”

Tanner Meyers led the team with 33 yards rushing on six carries and three catches for 15 yards.

Soda Springs travels to Firth on Friday.

DIETRICH 40, ROCKLAND 6

Rockland moved the ball up and down the field, but five turnovers doomed the Bulldogs in a 40-6 loss Friday at Dietrich.

Spencer Permann threw for 202 yards and ran for another 30. Dietrich picked Permann off four times and pounced on a fumble.

“We moved the ball effectively,” said Bulldogs coach Lance Freeman. “We’re young and we just couldn’t finish it. We’d turn the ball over. We just couldn’t get it completed.”

Rodney Parrish had 43 yards rushing, 55 yards in the air and one touchdown.

Rockland (0-1) plays Friday at Grace.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Pocatello High boys won the Pocatello Cross Country Challenge and the Century girls took second Friday at the ISU Centennial Course.

The Indians were led by Caleb Armstrong’s second-place finish in 9 minutes and 22 seconds. Caden Armstrong was fourth (9:55), Chresten Armstrong fifth (10:04) and Malachi Armstrong finished sixth overall (10:09).

On the girls side, Hillcrest edged Century for first by a single point, 39-40. The Diamondbacks’ Brook Chilton was second overall in 11:37, teammate Burkleigh Yost was third in 12:02 and Century’s Maddie Downes took fourth with a time of 12:08.

Those three all trailed Pocatello’s Molly Vitale-Sullivan, who roared to a first-place finish in 11:07. Pocatello’s Ally Whitmer finished in the top 10 at No. 9 with a time of 12:41.
