Spencer Van Orden sat out the Class 6A District IV-V-VI Championships with a hamstring injury.

But the Highland senior will still compete at this year’s state meet in Meridian after the IHSAA granted his hardship petition.

Van Orden is the reigning back-to-back state champion in the 110 and 300 hurdles, and his 13.44-second time in the 110 ranks eighth in the nation. He may also factor into the Rams’ 4x400 relay depending on his health.

In Van Orden’s absence, sophomore Keenan Garmendia claimed the 110 hurdles and junior Kellan Tingey took the 300 hurdles. Highland swept both the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. On the girls side, senior Gracee Anderson captured the 200 meters, junior Taryn Roth took the 300 hurdles and the Rams swept the 4x200 and 4x400. Rigby won both team titles at the meet, held May 7-8 at Bronco Stadium in Blackfoot.

CLASS 5A — District VIAt the same venue, Blackfoot captured the boys team title — the program’s first in five years. Boedy Callister led the way, sweeping three events: the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Dallas Jorgensen took the shot put and Owen Gregory, the reigning 800-meter state champion, defended his district title. The Broncos also claimed the 4x100 relay and sprint medley.

On the girls side, Lauren Christiansen took the 100 hurdles and triple jump and freshman Carly Christiansen claimed the long jump. Eva Grimm topped the discus field and Blackfoot swept the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

CLASS 5A and 4A — District VPocatello’s Cody Renzello swept the 5A boys sprint events, taking the 100, 200 and 400 at Hawthorne Middle School in Pocatello. Century’s Ethan Hansen claimed the 800 and 1600 and Ammon Bitton topped the 3200 field. Preston’s D’Carreih-Jo Lumpkin swept the high jump and pole vault.

Among 5A girls, Indians freshman Kinnley Robertson took both hurdle events and sophomore Hallie Spackman dominated the throws, claiming the shot put, discus and javelin. Thunder’s Katie Boyle captured the 1600 and 3200 and Diamondbacks senior Emryail Warnock swept the 100 and 200.

In the 4A division, Snake River’s Owen Jones claimed the shot put and discus and Matthew Bennett topped the distance events, taking the 1600 and 3200. Eagles senior Jaxson Smith captured the 400 and long jump. Lydia Townsend took the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and pole vault — and Isabelle Bastian swept the 100 and 200, also for the Eagles.

CLASS 3A — District IV-VSoda Springs hosted the 3A meet May 5-6, where West Side captured the boys team title (178.33 points) over Malad (169.83). The Dragons claimed the girls title (188) ahead of the Pirates (163).

Pirates senior Ethan Willis swept the 800 and 1600 and Gage Kidman topped the 400 and long jump. Tigers sophomore Maximilian Klassen claimed the 100 and 110 hurdles and Aberdeen swept all three relay events. Cardinals senior Cole Garbett dominated the throws, taking the shot put and discus. Dragons junior Braun Nalder captured the 300 hurdles and triple jump.

Among girls, Tigers senior Sage Rowlan swept the 100, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Cardinals senior Ellie Wood took the 800 and 1600 and teammate Ameliarose Harris claimed both the high jump and pole vault. Malad captured the 4x400 and sprint medley relays.

CLASS 2A — District V-VIBack in Pocatello at Century High School, Butte County claimed both team titles. Rockland finished second in boys and girls, with Grace third in both.

Grizzlies sophomore Carter Mecham captured the 400 and anchored victories in the 4x400 and sprint medley relay. Senior Adrian Mejia took the 800 and Jonah Wilkerson topped the 300 hurdles field. Bulldogs Xavier Parrish claimed the 1600 and Zach Permann took the triple jump.

Among girls, Grizzlies junior Brooklyn Porter swept the 800 and 1600 and Bella Eddins claimed the 100 hurdles. Bulldogs sophomore Gracie Freeman took the 300 hurdles, freshman Mahana Hatch topped the discus field and Rockland swept the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

The Class 6A and 5A state championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Mountain View High School in Meridian. The Class 4A, 3A and 2A state championships will be held Friday and Saturday at Middleton High School.
