POCATELLO - All week, the question swirling around the Pocatello football team was: How would the Indians respond to the suspension of their head football coach, Tom Harrison?

Now we know the answer.

Pocatello looked as focused and strong as ever during a 21-0 victory against Century on Friday at Holt Arena.

When it was over, the entire team chanted Harrison's name, and fans got in line to shake his hand while he walked around the bleachers holding a district championship trophy.

"Our kids really wanted to win for him," acting head coach Willie Walker said. "They were really emotional all week following everything that happened, but they came out with a lot of urgency and played really well."

With the win, the Indians locked up yet another 4A Fifth District regular season title and gave themselves the most desirable of scenarios for the first round of the state playoffs. Pocatello, 7-1 overall and 2-0 in district play, will begin its pursuit of a state title at home Oct. 31 against 1-7 Burley.

Century (4-4, 1-1) is headed to the playoffs, too. But it's path is much more difficult. Its first postseason game will be played at 7-1 Hillcrest on Halloween night.

The Indians set up their path by beating the Diamondbacks with their specialty - a high-powered running attack.

Zack McCain and Wes Howard led the charge with 67 yards and 87yards, respectively. But quarterback Hayden Green was also effective with his feet on scrambles. Running the ball just eight teams, he racked up 49 yards on the ground.

Slowing the game down and wearing down Century was Walker's game plan. He said he wanted to make it difficult on the Diamondbacks' two-way players to stay energized throughout the night by owning the line of scrimmage.

That, and stop Century's explosive offense from hitting the long play, which it did all night long.

Star wide receiver Koby Campbell only caught five passes for 56 yards, and quarterback Michael Semons was sacked four times.

"We talked all week about how we wanted to take the big play away from them," Walker said. "They have some really talented receivers, and they can hurt you."

Century tried to get big gains in a number of ways. The Diamondbacks ran a double-pass play in the first half and ran a fake punt in the second half. Neither play converted a first down.

In the end, the Diamondbacks only rushed the ball for 30 yards and didn't score a single point.

On the flip side, Poky turned the ball over five times and still scored 21 points. The Indians touchdowns came on a five-yard run from McCain, a five-yard run from Michael Decker on a direct-snap and a one-yard plunge from Green.

Century coach Nate Borchert said Poky simply had too much size.

"They're a physical team," he said. "I don't think our kids let down at all, and we stuck in there. But it's basic physics. When one guy weighs more than you, eventually after you keep pushing the other guy is going to win. It's going to happen that way."
