Much of Larrabee State Park will be closed Sept. 16 through May 2027 while the park's water system is replaced.

The park sits along Chuckanut Drive on the Skagit-Whatcom county line.

According to a State Parks news release, the work with modernize the park's aging pipes, improve park infrastructure and reduce maintenance requirements.

Construction will close park campgrounds and day-use areas, including shelters and restrooms.

Areas of the park that will remain open include the boat launch, Cleator Road, Chuckanut Drive, Cove Road, Hiline Road, Clayton Beach, the Interurban Trail, the Lost Lake parking lot, and the Lost Lake and Fragrance Lake trails.

According to the news release, the park's current water system includes pipes from different eras. Some of the pipes may be original to the park, which was founded in 1915.

The new system will improve water service to hookup sites in the campground and to facilities, day-use areas, kitchen shelters and other parts of the park. Campers will also enjoy improved water quality.

The new pipes will be made of high-density polyethylene — a durable, lower-maintenance material.

It will also create a sealed system with fewer leaks, reducing the number of maintenance emergencies that could close parts of the park on short notice.

When the work is complete, the project will bring the water-carrying system up to modern standards with sturdy, reliable infrastructure.
