PORTLAND, Ore. — A former Eastern Idaho man died after he reportedly shot at two Portland police officers in a parking garage in Oregon on Monday.

    Officers Brad Kula and Michele Boer drove to the top level of the parking garage located at Northeast Seventh Avenue and Lloyd Boulevard about 10:45 p.m. on Monday. There they were unexpectedly confronted by Santiago A. Cisneros III, who fired multiple shots from a shotgun, according to a Portland Police Bureau news release. The officers, who weren’t injured in the incident, returned fire and hit the 32-year-old man who then fell to the ground.

    Additional officers responded to the scene and used a shield to help them get closer to Cisneros who was still moving around next to his gun, according to the news release. They took him into custody, and then medical personnel transported him to a hospital, where he later died.

    Both Kula and Boer have been placed on paid administrative leave pending a grand jury inquiry, according to the news release.

    Cisneros was a former Idaho State University student and employee at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, according to his Linkedin profile, which lists his most recent occupation as a legal intern at a firm in Seattle.

    Cisneros was also an Army combat veteran who told KOMO News in Seattle in 2009 that he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, and tried to kill himself eight months after he left Iraq.

    “I fought a war back there in Iraq. I didn’t know I was going to have to fight a war back here in the United States within myself,” he told the news station, adding that he was getting help through the Veterans Administration at that time.
