POCATELLO — The shooting death of a Pocatello man involved in a standoff with police Thursday morning has been ruled a self-inflicted one, according to Bannock County Coroner Kim Quick and Idaho State Police Lt. John Ganske.

    Ganske said the bullet wound matched the caliber of weapon in the victim’s possession. Because the victim’s death was ruled a suicide, his name has not been released.

    Idaho State Police are investigating the incident because a Pocatello Police officer fired “multiple rounds” during the standoff, according to Lt. Ganske. It is standard procedure for an independent agency to probe any officer shooting.

    Police responded to a 911 report of domestic violence at a home on Flint Circle, which is off Arapahoe Street, at about 8:15 a.m. Thursday. Police said the man and two women were inside the house and he was armed. During the ensuing tandoff, a police officer fired his weapon multiple times, but no one was struck by that gunfire, according to police.

    Ganske said the man in the house did not return fire. Interviews with the Pocatello officer who fired shots will be conducted Monday and Ganske said he hopes to have a report completed by midweek.

    During Thursday’s standoff, police reportedly heard a muffled gunshot inside the home. When they entered they discovered  the man with a wound to his chest. He was taken to Portneuf Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

    Indian Hills Elementary, which is near the home where the standoff took place, was put on “controlled access” restriction during the incident.
