The National Weather Service is warning that Eastern Idaho will experience the most critical wildfire threat possible Wednesday due to lightning and damaging winds.

The red flag warning issued by the weather service for Wednesday states that thunderstorms moving through Eastern Idaho will produce lightning and winds of up to 50 mph.

The storms will likely drop very little precipitation, while temperatures in the region will approach 100 degrees—adding to the wildfire threat.

The weather service says the strong winds will cause any wildfire that does occur to spread rapidly. Winds of 50 mph will also cause damage to houses and other buildings and will make controlling a vehicle difficult.

The wildfire threat will be most severe until 9 p.m. Wednesday, but the thunderstorms and near 100-degree temps will continue through Friday in Eastern Idaho.
