MORELAND — The Moreland post office will reduce its hours of operation after the holidays, but it’s not yet clear what those hours will be.

Natalie Bergevin, postmaster relief facility located in Bingham County, said they will only be open for six hours on weekdays beginning in January; however they haven’t decided what time the post office will open and close each day.

“We’re trying to decide what would be best for our customers,” Bergevin said, adding that they want the hours of operation to be convenient for people who need to mail something, but they also need to make sure they get the mail out as early as possible.

The post office is currently open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, so the facility will likely have to open later or close earlier in the future. Although she knows that may cause some difficulties for customers, Bergevin said it’s a better alternative than shutting the post office down.

“The mail volume is going down and this is certainly better than closing the office,” she said.

The post office held a public meeting to discuss the changes last week and roughly 35 people showed up, Bergevin said, adding that their feelings were mixed. Still, the change isn’t necessarily permanent. Post office officials have said they will reevaluate the reduction in hours if the revenue there goes up in the future.

“It depends on community needs,” Bergevin said, adding that usage plays a big role in the decision.

Currently, they have 300 post office boxes at the facility and most are in use.

“We service several businesses in the area and several groups that do bulk mailing,” she said, adding that they draw customers from as far as Idaho Falls and Arco.

Bergevin, who has worked at the post office for 20 years, hopes people will continue using the facility in the future. And she said she and her lone co-worker will do their best to continue meeting the customers’ needs.

“We’re both very concerned about serving the public,” she said, adding that they have a long history with the community. “They’re not just the public, but they’re our friends and our neighbors and they’re our number one priority.”
