BLACKFOOT — A 33-year-old man sustained serious injuries on Monday morning after he was hit by a crane boom in a construction area near Walmart in Blackfoot.
Capt. Kurt Asmus with the Blackfoot Police Department said the crane had been used in the construction of a new building just east of Walmart. The man, whose name has not been released, was working to load the crane onto a flatbed trailer when the accident occurred.
“He was taking the boom off and got underneath it,” Asmus said, adding that the boom somehow shifted and fell on top of him around 9:15 a.m. Law enforcement officers from Blackfoot and Bingham County responded to the scene, as well as the Blackfoot ambulance services.
Asmus said they were able to utilize some other construction equipment in the area to get the boom off of the man within roughly 15 minutes. He was then immediately flown to Portneuf Medical Center with serious injuries.
