IRWIN — A man riding in the bed of a pickup truck was airlifted to a hospital Saturday night after a Tesla rear-ended the truck on U.S. Highway 26 in Irwin near Palisades Reservoir, Idaho State Police said.

The collision shut down the road for three and a half hours.

The crash happened at approximately 10 p.m. on Highway 26 when a 2006 GMC Sierra, driven by a 27-year-old Idaho Falls man, was traveling eastbound with two passengers, both also from Idaho Falls — a 26-year-old man inside the vehicle and a 27-year-old man riding in the bed of the truck.

A 2023 Tesla Model S, driven by a 63-year-old Idaho Falls man, was also headed eastbound on Highway 26 when it rear-ended the GMC, according to state police. The Tesla came to rest on the eastbound shoulder, while the GMC came to rest in the eastbound lanes.

The 27-year-old man who had been riding in the bed of the pickup was airlifted via emergency helicopter to a local hospital for treatment, state police said.

Authorities haven’t provided any updates on his condition. None of the names of those involved in the crash have been released.

The wreck remains under investigation by Idaho State Police.
