A large crowd enjoyed a day full of activities in Weston on Saturday celebrating Pioneer Day.

    “We had a good, old-fashioned celebration,” said Mayor Camille Larsen, who helped organize this year’s event. “I think those who attended enjoyed the hometown feel the celebration had.”

    Activities started with a 5k fun run at 8 a.m. and monies raised from the event will help purchase a disabled swing that will be placed in the park. Larsen said enough funds came in to purchase the swing.

    “We still need a little bit of funding to place the swing on a foundation. But I’m sure we’ll get what we need to finish the project,” she said.

    Larsen said the parade started 9:30 a.m.

    “It was bigger and better than in previous years. We had a lot of candy that was thrown and it lasted over a half an hour, which is good for our little community. We had a lot of entries that traveled down Main Street,” she said. “Games and food booths opened just as soon as the parade finished. We had a lot of vendors.”

    A greased-pig scramble started at noon at the city park. “This pig scramble was new this year and was for anyone 18 years old or older,” said Van Woodward, a city councilman. “It was for all those who were frustrated when they didn’t catch a greased pig as a youngster. Jayson Hurren caught the pig. It was fun to watch.

    “We had a good, old-fashioned Western shootout in front of Woodward’s Country store at 7 p.m. Bart Ashby’s group from Linrose came and put on a good show that lasted about 45 minutes. We featured local resident Sydney Blair, as the ‘fastest girl’ in the West.”

    Larsen said the band, Roughstock, presented a free concert after the shootout and the park area was packed with people. “And at dark we finished the day with a fireworks display,” she said.

    Woodward said the celebration seems like it is getting bigger and better every year. “But all the activities were not just for entertainment. We want to continually honor our pioneers, who settled this valley and sacrificed so much.”
