IDAHO FALLS — An anonymous threat against Compass Academy in Idaho Falls has triggered an immediate police response, canceled all Thursday classes and prompted the deployment of law enforcement officers to a neighboring elementary school as investigators work to determine whether the threat is credible.

Idaho Falls School District 91 announced Wednesday that a student received a generic anonymous threat targeting Compass Academy. The Idaho Falls Police Department was immediately contacted and is actively investigating.

"IFPD has not yet determined if the threat is credible," the district said in a statement. "The district is taking a cautious approach."

All Compass Academy Thursday classes have been canceled in response to the threat.

While the threat was specific to Compass Academy, school officials are leaving nothing to chance at neighboring Erickson Elementary. The threat has prompted Idaho Falls Police Department to deploy officers to Erickson Thursday morning as students arrive. Erickson students will enter the building directly upon arrival and doors will remain locked throughout the entire school day — an added layer of security designed to keep students and staff safe while the investigation continues.

Erickson will otherwise operate on its normal schedule.

District officials were direct in their message to anyone who might consider making similar threats.

"Threats or violence are not a joking matter," the district said. "Idaho Falls School District and Idaho Falls Police Department take all threats seriously. All threats and reports are thoroughly investigated."
