Those expecting the weather to cooperate with Memorial Day's start of the summer vacation season will likely be disappointed by the frost on the ground and mountain snow falling in Eastern Idaho.  

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather alert and frost advisory stating that temperatures are expected to dip near or below freezing Friday morning, causing frost to form in much of Eastern and Central Idaho.

The snow will be confined to the region's higher elevations, with the Central Idaho Mountains getting the most. The weather service has declared a winter weather advisory for Lemhi County calling for up to 3 inches of snow in most places and up to 6 inches on the highest mountains through Friday morning. Motorists are being urged to use caution if traveling in Lemhi County and the weather service believes the wet, heavy snow could cause power outages, especially in the Salmon area.

Mountain snowfall totals in other places in Eastern and Central Idaho will likely be around 1 inch through Friday morning.

The frost on Friday morning is expected to be present in most places region-wide through mid-morning.

Depending on nighttime and morning temperatures, the frost and mountain snow could return to Eastern and Central Idaho on Sunday and Memorial Day.

Because of the threat of below freezing temperatures, the weather service is urging residents to protect their sensitive vegetation. Conditions will be cold enough to possibly kill some plants.

Eastern Idaho and the Central Idaho mountains could also receive rain showers and isolated thunderstorms Friday through Monday. In Eastern Idaho, the precipitation will be worst and most likely in areas north of Idaho Falls on Friday and Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms could be a problem throughout Eastern Idaho on Sunday and Monday and again on Wednesday.

The thunderstorms in the forecast Friday through Memorial Day will likely produce high winds and hail.

Weather conditions similar to Eastern Idaho's will be present in surrounding states.
