Temperature lows on Monday broke previous records set in Idaho Falls, Challis and Stanley, according to National Weather Service officials.
NWS Forecaster Dan Valle warns people that temperature lows will be stuck in the below-zero category through the end of the week.
“The record low for tomorrow morning (Jan. 16) is minus 13 and was recorded back in 1947. We predict the low will dip down to -4,” Valle said. “Beating that record low is going to be hard to catch.”
In general, record lows for the next few days are locked in at around -25 degrees.
“There is no way it will get that cold over the next couple of nights. Although, it will continue to be bitterly cold into the weekend. We may hit -7 and -5 degrees,” Valle said. “We might experience a slight warm up on Sunday with mid-20 degrees for area highs and single digit lows.”
The record low for Idaho Falls set in 1964 was 17 below. The lowest temperature recorded on Monday was -19 degrees.
In Challis, a low of -17 degrees broke the record of -12 that was set back in 1960.
Residents in Stanley experienced temperatures on Monday below 29 degrees, tying the current record low set in 1997.
The NWS forecast for the Pocatello and Blackfoot areas today call for fog prior to the 11 a.m. hour. Otherwise, people can expect the sun to eventually shine through the clouds with a high near 20 and wind chill values as low as -16.
On Wednesday night, patchy, freezing fog is expected to creep in after 11 p.m. with a low around -7.
Much of the same is predicted for the Idaho Falls area today with patchy fog likely to appear before 11 a.m. The mostly sunny day will be accompanied with a high near 15 and wind chill values as low as -21 degrees.
During the nighttime hours, patchy, freezing fog could form after 11 p.m. with a low around -7. Wind chill values could decrease the temperature low even further to -15 degrees.
NWS officials will be keeping their eye on local rivers and streams through Monday as the extremely cold temperatures could cause minor flooding due to ice jams.
