Firefighters continued to battle multiple wildfires Saturday after lightning sparked several blazes across the southern half of the state.

    In Southeast Idaho, the Franson Fire had consumed about 81 acres by Saturday evening. Resources on the scene included four engines, a bulldozer and two 20-person hand crews. No estimate could be made on control or containment.

    The State Fire in northern Utah had crossed into Idaho about 13 miles west of Interstate 15 and had burned approximately 10,500 acres — 300 in Idaho. The Idaho Interagency Fire Center had two engines assisting.

    A complex of 11 fires in the Mountain Home area, stretching to the southwestern end of Anderson Ranch Reservoir, burned across nearly 47 square miles and was growing Friday, said Brandon Hampton, spokesman for the Boise district of the Bureau of Land Management.

    “It’s very hot, dry and there’s some wind as well. Everything we don’t want on our fire,” he said.

    About 125 firefighters were assigned to the so-called Pony Complex. Six aircraft were dropping retardant on the blazes, which destroyed 10 outbuildings and cabins and forced the closure of Highway 20 between Mountain Home and the Camas County line.

    Northwest of Fairfield near the Soldier Mountain ski resort, some 200 firefighters worked to contain the McCan Fire, which burned across 23 square miles, fire information officer Josh Olsen said.

    He said air tankers and helicopters were dropping retardant and water on the blaze that destroyed three cabins and several outbuildings.

    Some structures were still threatened by the fire, Olsen said, but no evacuations were ordered.

    No injuries were reported from any of the fires.
