POCATELLO — City firefighters responded to two dwelling fires Saturday afternoon. One destroyed a mobile home on S. Fifth Ave. and the second damaged an apartment at the Pocatello Heights complex on N. 15th Street.

    There were no serious injuries.

    The only occupant of a mobile home at 4530 S. Fifth Ave. escaped with singed hair after the dwelling was engulfed in flames Saturday about 12:30 p.m.

    A full contingent of three Pocatello Fire Department engines and an ambulance responded to the fire.

    The burning trailer was located in a cluster of other dwellings in the Hill-Vu Mobile Home Park.

    “We had flames coming out of all the windows,” Pocatello Fire Department Battalion Chief Tom Sanford said about the initial arrival of the fire department.

    According to Sanford, one male was asleep inside the home and when he awoke, he discovered the trailer was on fire. He immediately fled the burning structure and called 911.

    “He was lucky,” Sanford said. “If it’s hot enough to singe hair, it’s hot enough to harm you.”

    An ambulance crew checked out the man who had been inside the trailer when the fire broke out and released him.

    Firefighters at the scene said he then drove himself to Portneuf Medical Center for additional medical examination, but returned to the scene later to inspect the damage.

    Fire crews had to remove much of the exterior siding on the structure to douse hotspots and remained on the scene for more than two hours.

    “The structure and the contents are a total loss,” said Engine One commanding officer Glen Powell. “And it was uninsured.”

    According to Sanford, the occupant of the mobile home was renting it and in negotiations with the owner to purchase it at the time of the blaze.

    Fire crews were called out again at 4:30 p.m. when a fire was reported inside an apartment in building 6 of the Pocatello Heights Apartments, 344 N. 15th.

    Dozens of residents were evacuated as firefighters contained the blaze to Apartment 6-G. No one was in the residence at the time of the fire and there were no injuries to any residents of the complex.

    The causes of both fires remains under investigation according to Pocatello Fire Department Chief David Gates.
