CHUBBUCK — Firefighters battled a Sunday morning fire that destroyed a vacant building along one of Chubbuck’s busiest roads.

The blaze was reported around 6:40 a.m. at a building on East Chubbuck Road near Burley Drive and the railroad tracks.

Chubbuck firefighters responded and began to extinguish the flames consuming the building.

Firefighters remained on the scene until noon Sunday battling the fire and then making sure it was completely out.

The building was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene, so they did not try to venture inside the structure. Firefighters hit the fire with water from hoses positioned outside of the building and from the Fire Department’s ladder truck. They said the snowy weather made battling the fire difficult.

Firefighters said they were successful in keeping the fire from spreading to nearby businesses, though some of those businesses did suffer some smoke damage.

East Chubbuck Road and Burley Drive were temporarily shut down by police because of the fire.

The fire did not result in any injuries, police said.

Authorities said the fire remains under investigation and they do not yet have any idea what could have caused the blaze.

The vacant building was owned by the Chubbuck Development Authority and had been used on occasion by the Fire Department for training. But firefighters said they had not done any training at the building in more than a year.

Firefighters said the building was originally a potato cellar.
