BLACKFOOT — Like many sons and fathers, twins Matthew and Gunnar Nelson had a special bond with their father growing up. They would wait for their dad to come home from work so that they could play together and were even inspired by their father’s profession enough to follow in his footsteps.

Their father just happened to be famous rock musician Ricky Nelson. And, though Ricky Nelson’s life and musical career was cut short in when he was killed in a plane crash in December 1985, his memory and music lives on in a celebration show put together by his twin sons.

“Ricky Nelson Remembered” will be perform at the Blackfoot Performing Arts Center, 870 S. Fisher Ave. in Blackfoot on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person for reserved seating. The show will feature Ricky Nelson’s music performed by his sons, as well as video footage of Nelson including interviews.

Ricky Nelson was one of two sons of American band leader and entertainer Ozzie Nelson, and essentially grew up on television on the show “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” which ran for 14 seasons.

The Nelson twins used the fact that Ricky spent so much time on television to make the show a multi media experience.

“He was on the family television show for fourteen and a half years, 435 episodes. And we have this wealth of video material that we can pull from, and that’s what we did. The show is really equal part of this really cool video screen with stories on what was going on behind the scenes, not only in our dad’s life, but in America at the time. It is best described as a high energy rock concert meets an A & E Biography episode,” said Gunnar Nelson in a recent phone interview with the Journal.

Ricky Nelson is best-known for his songs “Garden Party,” “Poor Little Fool,” “I’m Walkin’” and “Travelin’ Man,” the latter of which is often credited as having the first conceptual music video.

In addition to being a musician and appearing on television, Nelson also appeared in several films, including “Rio Bravo” with John Wayne and Dean Martin. He won a Golden Globe award for the film

He is the only artist to have a number one song, movie and TV show in the same week.

Also, the Nelson’s are listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the only family in history with three successive generations of No. 1 hit makers.

Matthew and Gunnar Nelson also tour with their band, Nelson, which is known for the songs “After the Rain” and (Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection.

But, Gunnar Nelson says this celebration show is all about their father.

“The last show he ever played is this show in this order. The only time we deviate from that is two times: We do a little snippet of “Love and Affection,” and then we end the show with a song we wrote called “Just Once More.”
