Boede Paul, 25, was killed in Jan. 16 shootout

    POCATELLO — No criminal charges should be filed in the officer-involved shooting of Boede Paul last January.

    That was the determination of the Twin Falls County Prosecutor Grant Loebs, who reviewed the incident report compiled by the Pocatello Police Department, Bannock County Prosecutor Steve Herzog said Wednesday.

    Paul was a suspect in the disappearance of Angelea Schultz, Paul’s girlfriend with whom he had a child. He died on Jan. 16 after a six-hour standoff with police after he exited his truck and opened fire on officers. Nine of them returned fire, eight at the time were deputies with the Bannock County Sheriff’s office and the other a member of the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office.

    Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen, two days after the incident, said that during the standoff Paul admitted to killing Schultz, adding that he had buried her body in a construction zone near the Fort Hall Townsite. The standoff took place along the border with the Fort Hall Reservation.

    The Pocatello Police Department, which did not have officers among the multi-agency task force that responded to the standoff, conducted the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

    In his release Wednesday, Herzog wrote that it was Pocatello police Sgt. Nathan Diekemper, the lead investigator, who compiled that report, which was turned over to the Bannock County Prosecutor’s Office. Because of potential conflicts, Herzog passed the report on to the Twin Falls Prosecutor’s Office for review and recommendations.

    Additional information will be released on Friday during a scheduled news conference at the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office.
