POCATELLO—The City Council named a new leader for the Fire Department on Thursday night.

The council unanimously approved the selection of David Gates as Pocatello’s new fire chief, effective Friday. Gates is an 18-year veteran of the Pocatello Fire Department and has been the interim fire chief since August when former Fire Chief Mike Irwin resigned to take a position in Arkansas.

“It’s already a great department and I am looking forward to taking the department forward,” Gates said. “I love my job."
